New Hampshire property tax rates by town
The median New Hampshire town or city taxes property at $16.90 per $1,000 of assessed value for 2025. Rates run from $2.62 in Hart's Location to $36.54 in Charlestown. Every rate below is the total the Department of Revenue Administration set for the town, and each name opens that town's page with its parts, history and bill table.

How the 234 rates spread out
New Hampshire has no general sales tax or tax on wages, so the property tax carries town budgets, schools and the county, and its rate varies more than in most states. 147 municipalities raised their total rate from 2024 to 2025 and 83 lowered it. In 53 of them the assessed valuation without utilities grew by 15% or more in one year, the mark of an assessment update; RSA 75:8-a requires every town to reappraise at least once every five years, so a rate drop is often a revaluation, not a cut in what owners pay.
The school rates dominate: the median local school rate is $9.75 and the median state education rate $1.13, against $4.59 for the median municipal rate and $1.34 for the county. Because each town assesses property at its own share of market value, a lower rate is not always a lower bill; the guide to assessed and market value explains the equalization ratio the state uses to compare towns.

Appeals and exemptions
Every New Hampshire municipality follows the same abatement calendar: a written application to the town by March 1, a decision by July 1, and an appeal to the Board of Tax and Land Appeals or superior court by September 1, when the final bill went out by December 31. The appeal page has the statutes and the Board's own description of what it compares. Credits and exemptions, such as the $50 a year standard veterans' credit and the elderly exemption, are applied for at the town by April 15 and are covered in the exemptions guide.
